You have visited your favourite salon and finally taken the plunge to colour your hair, but after a few weeks, you start to notice that those beautiful shades of colour become dull and lifeless. Luckily, this doesn’t have to be a fact of life. We’ve put together a couple of tips that are sure to keep your newly coloured hair full of life for longer.
- Don’t go straight to the shower
Wait at least 24 hours before washing your hair after a colour session, as washing it will strip the colour before it has time to sink in. Also, be sure to avoid using hot water when you do wash your hair, and instead wash with cool or room-temperature water.
- Choose the right shampoo
All shampoos aren’t created equal. A harsh shampoo can strip the colour from your hair fairly quickly, so rather choose a shampoo that is gentle, meant for coloured hair and sulphate free. Another type a shampoo to consider is a dry shampoo, as it will absorb excess oil and also give you bounce without the negative effects of other rough shampoos.
- Conditioner matters
A good quality conditioner is important, so choose one meant for coloured hair. Wring your hair out well and apply the conditioner as per the instructions.
- How you shampoo
Start with shampooing your roots and not in the middle to end of the hair because starting from the middle will stripyour colour over time.
- Shield your hair from heat
Your hair is protected by a cuticle layer, but this layer can be stripped away when you colour your hair, which makes it vulnerable to heat damage. A heat protective spray, or hair oil, applied before and during the blow drying process will keep you safe from heat damage.
- Avoid the sun
If you are planning to spend time outside, for example at the beach or going for a hike, then cover up your hair from the sun’s harsh rays.
- Chlorine is not your friend
Chlorine can destroy coloured hair. Try to not put your head underwater, but if you do, use a leave-in conditioner to minimise the impact.
By implementing these simple tips, you can enjoy your coloured hair for longer without breaking the bank with repeated follow-ups.
